Review: "Solo: A Star Wars Story"

Lucasfilms has yet again proven why its the best in the business. Not only is 'Solo' a deeply entertaining movie and has a refreshing feel to it, but it also accomplishes the objective of being a spin-off - to add more meaning and depth to the events of the original saga.

The movie digs deep into Han Solo's mind and show us the logic behind his decisions from the very beginning of his debut way back in 1977's 'A New Hope'. The movie is set in a time frame same as 'Rogue One' and leads directly into 'A New Hope' with Solo and Chewbacca traveling to Tatooine in the end to meet 'the Hutts'.

The movie is full of twists with characters betraying each other in every scene - this I think is a perfect metaphor for Han Solo. We get to see a young and amateur Han Solo who learns a great deal from his companions and ultimately becomes the Solo we meet in 'The New Hope'. Almost everything about Han's character in the original saga is a result of things that happen in this movie.

The movie is made magnificent by its cast. Emilia Clarke's portrayal of Q'ira is absolutely fantastic and is a red beacon to the industry that the Dragon Queen is ready to take on some real action now that everyone's beloved Game of Thrones is gonna wrap its final season in 2019. An even better performance is seen in Donald Glover who fantastically steps into the shoes of Lando Calrissian and portrays the eccentricities of the fan favorite character with perfection. The same can be said about Woody Harrelson as Becket and Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos (Paul's voice was a cherry on top of the already well-written character). But, these guys are established actresses and actors.

The real show-steeling performance, the real deal, the haul monging performance was of the protagonist - Han Solo, who was quintessentially portrayed by Alden Ehrenreich. To be honest, I didn't expect a lot from Alden, mostly because I had never seen him act in anything before and the trailer didn't really give us a lot of him. Bang on humor, impeccable wit and a cocky perception about everything; Alden was probably a better Solo than Harrison Ford.

This movie sends out a clear message to the film industry and fans all around the globe though the new age trilogy might be coming to an end next year, the crew has the potential to carry this franchise ahead on for a very long time.

P.S. Turns out, getting sawed in half wont kill you if you're strong with the force.
